The open space on the right bank of the Moskva River is the Square of Europe, with the Kiev public garden. Beyond the square is the Kievsky rail terminal.
The railway was built here at the very end of the 19th century. And here, on Red Meadow, as this area is called, you can see a small wooden station. The current Kievsky rail terminal building dates from 1918. In order to emphasise the greatness of the building, it was decided in the general plans for reconstructing Moscow in 1935 to expand the rail terminal square up to Dorogomilovskaya Ulitsa, and to 'architecturally incorporate it with due account for the ensemble of the river Moskva and Borodino bridge'.
