Topographically speaking, the Moskva-River is a left-branching fork of the Oka River. In all the Moskva flows for 502 kilometres or 311 miles, of which 80 kilometres (or fifty miles) run through the capital itself. The Moskva River-Lake – as its source is known – has its own sources in the Starkovy Marshes, further out in Moscow County Region. The river makes six large bends within the city area, but three of them have been straightened by modern canals – at Khoroshevo, Karamyshevo and Nagatino.
