Over het museum

The Dordrechts Museum, established in 1842, is one of the oldest art museums in The Netherlands. In just over 175 years a rich collection has been formed comprising six centuries of Dutch painting.
For example rare altar pieces such as The Last Supper by Willem Key. Highlights of the 17th century are works by the famous landscape artist Aelbert Cuyp and the Dordrecht artists – all apprenticed to Rembrandt – Nicolaes Maes, Ferdinand Bol and Arent de Gelder. Animal painter Aert Schouman and the brothers Van Strij, who produced decorative wallpaper and paintings for the luxuriously appointed houses of the moneyed class in the 18th century.

The Dordrechts Museum owns a unique collection of paintings and drawings by the Dordrecht born Ary Scheffer. He made a name for himself in Paris and is one of the great romantic painters of the 19th century. The late 19th century is represented by painters of the Hague School – Mesdag, Weissenbruch and the brothers Maris – and by the Amsterdam impressionists Breitner and Isaac Israels.

The 20th and 21st century are represented by innovators such as Jan Sluijters, Karel Appel, Armando, René Daniëls en Marlene Dumas but also by recent works of young artists like Frank Ammerlaan en RaQuel van Haver. They demonstrate that the art of painting is still very much alive and linked to a long tradition.

Six centuries of painting in Dordrechts Museum: always something new to discover.
