The first equestrian state to a Russian Tsar is now and always – The Bronze Horseman. Although it's really known as The Copper Horseman in Russian. The author of this state is usually given as the sculptor Falconet, but draw your own conclusions... the theme of the statue, and its topic of the Triumph of Will over Nature had originally been discussed by Catherine II with Voltaire and Diderot.
The statue's head – representing Tsar Peter – was made by Falconet's pupil Marie-Anne Collot, while the serpent was fashioned by sculptor Fyodor Gordeev. The gigantic pedestal, known as the Thunder-Stone, was found by a serf named Vishnyakov, and its transport to St Petersburg was organised by Ivan Betskoi, Engineer to Her Imperial Majesty.
Once on site, Falconet took the Thunder-Stone – and polished and improved it. It seemed as though Her Majesty's concept of a “triumph over wild Nature” was sapping away.
