Some basalt and andesite-basalt masses that differ in their specific structure are found in numerous lava flows in Armenia. They are broken into columns, having a pentagonal or hexagonal profile. Such columns (columnar jointing) usually are specific to inner parts of thick lava flows, where hardening processes proceed relatively slower than on the surface.
In Armenia there exist a number of interesting geological monuments represented by columnar basalts and andesite-basalts, sometimes unique in their beauty and regularity of form. Among such geological monuments are the ''Basaltic Organ'', curved basalt pillars in the Garni River canyon, the ''Elephant Roadway'' on the left bank of the Hrazdan River near the village of Geghamech.
