Just in front of the Historical Museum on Manezhnaya Square you can see a monument to the great Soviet military commander Georgy Zhukov.
Marshal Zhukov is depicted at the moment when he received the Victory Parade on 24th June 1945. On that day mounted on a white horse he rode of Spasskaya Gates on to Red Square. The horse’s hooves trample the military standards of Nazi Germany. In this way the sculptor allegorically plays on the legend of St George’s victory over the dragon.Initially it was planned to put the monument on Red Square, but UNESCO objected to this. It was then decided to put it by the northern wall of the Historical Museum.
