Andersens Bakery
While being here on the Tivoli grounds we might as well grab a bite! Let´s try some famous grub at the Andersen Bakery in the Nimb building here in Tivoli Gardens across from Copenhagen Central Station.
This little bakery has for over 50 years been home to Danish baking tradition, although, curiously enough, the baker is Japanese! When coming to Copenhagen in the 50´s he became so inspired by Danish baking tradition that he went back to Japan and founded the first Danish bakery there, producing traditional Danish bread, pastries and cakes. Being surrounded by Danish goodies wasn´t enough for this Japanese bakery pioneer, though. His longing for Denmark grew stronger every day, and his dream of going back never died, so one day he packed up and went back to Copenhagen where he started this bakery that stays true to Danish baking tradition up until today.
Here you can find anything from pastry, cakes and bread to go, or you can sit down in the cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee and cake. They also serve breakfast or brunch. It might come as a surprise that this Japanese owned Danish bakery has maybe the best hotdogs in Copenhagen! Not truly traditional, but more to the gourmet end of the hot dog scale; you cannot leave here without trying their hotdogs consisting of home made sausage, wrapped in brioche-bread and topped off with a mouthful of creamy remoulade. It might be interesting to know that these heavenly treats can now also be savoured in San Francisco, as Andersen Bakery has opened a pastry shop there as well!
When you have rested your feet and your stomachs had its fair share of Danish treats it´s time to move on to the next cultural experience.
