Desk Telephone Apparatus
Ericsson
Sweden
1962
Rotary-dial apparatus, made of Bakelite.
When Ericsson’s Bakelite telephones first appeared in the 1930s, they were popularly called the ‘Swedish’ phone. People saw this telephone as an image of a ‘new’ telephone. It was, in fact, the result of Swedish-Norwegian cooperation, as this model was designed and produced at the Elektrisk Bureau A/S factory in Oslo. In 1928 Ericsson took over this Company and decided on large-scale production and the popularization of Bakelite telephones. For telephone manufacturers, the transition to Bakelite was a revolution. The model proved so popular that it remained in production until 1962.
