Over het museum

Victor Vasarely is best known for modernising the Renault logo in the 1970s. Victor Vasarely is a renowned 20th-century visual artist who created a new trend: optical art.

Developing his own model of geometric abstract art, the Hungarian artist, who became a naturalised French citizen in 1961, used a minimal number of shapes and colours. For example, Vasarely likened the rhombus and the ellipse to deformations of the square and the circle, involving space and movement, to force the retina to create its own image.

In a Vasarely painting, symmetry is most often expressed along several axes: vertical, horizontal and diagonal. Most of Vasarely's works make use of numerous mathematical resources. He chose geometric shapes and bright or monochrome colours, having fun distorting perspectives to obtain optical effects.

His work is highly coherent, from the evolution of his graphic art to his determination to promote social art accessible to all.
