Delaware was a border state and a slave state, reflecting in miniature the division of the United States during the Civil War. No significant battles were fought on Delaware soil, but thousands of Delawareans fought on both sides in this conflict to preserve the union from dissolution, by the slave-holding states of the Confederacy.
