Über das Museum

The Diocesan Museum is located inside Palazzo Ripanti in Federico II square, the most important square in Jesi. In the 15th century this palace hosted the Santa Lucia’s Hospital which was moved during the 18th century. The family Ripanti, one of the richest families of landowners of that time, bough this palace in 1724 but they moved here only in 1742. Later the interior of the palace was restored and on the 13th of November of 1966, on the first floor, the Diocesan Museum was founded and later renewed in 1983. Here you can admire more than 150 works including paintings, sculptures, and holy objects. It was founded with the aim of collecting testimonies of religious art of the region. The works in the museum cover a period raging from the 4th to the 20th century. It also hosts a collection of Contemporary Art with works by artists form the region. The museum is divided into 9 rooms plus an entrance hall called “Sala Valeri” due to the author of the paintings in this room. Domenico Luigi Valeri was born in Jesi, but he studied in Rome and with the four biggest paintings in this room he represented four episodes from the Old Testament. In this room there are also five little canvas that represent some “putti” with flowers. All the canvas in this room were commissioned to Valeri by the family Ripanti, so they don’t have any signature. In the 19th century the “Sala Valeri” hosted a seminary funded by the great musician Gaspare Spontini. In fact, you can see two writings above the doors that tell us the classes that used to be in these two rooms: one of “ELOQUENTIAE” and one of “SCRIPTURAE”. During your visit you can also find works by other authors such as Giovanni Antonio Bellinzoni da Pesaro, Antonino Sarti, Biagio Biagetti and so on. Between rooms 5 and 6 you can also admire a section dedicated to the Icons of the Orthodox Christianity.
