Über das Museum

Wordwell is a small parish in the Suffolk Brecklands containing a small Norman Church, one of the few not to have been enlarged or rebuilt.  At the time of the Domesday survey, Wordwell was a manor on the estate of St Edmund's with a church and a population of 15 families with 2 slaves.

All Saints possesses a Norman doorway which is early 12th century and is completely unrestored with a plain arch.

Although much of the church was restored by the Victorians between 1857 - 1866, All Saints still contains stone carvings and 13th - 15th century oak benches which have beautiful carvings of animal figures, poppyheads and one is said to represent three dragons, a jester with a curled up tail and animal bodies with human heads.

I used to live near this beautiful church. Its really small but very unique.I once went in some years ago whilst out cycling . I was inspired by some one who had taken their time to write a full history of the church. Included in the information was references to the sculptures but in particular there is a beautiful one of a couple tying the Knott. I didn't have a camera but I wish you would show this on the image sites. Is the file still there?
