The Basilica of Saint Mark is considered to be one of the most illustrious churches in the world. The reasons for this are manifold and lie essentially in its religious, political and artistic importance.

Let’s first consider the religious aspect: this church is a major pilgrimage site since the relics of Saint Mark, one of the four New Testament Evangelists, lie here.
