Über das Museum
The old Collegiate Church of San Patricio was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1941. Its construction was due to the gratitude of the Lorquinos after the victory in the Battle of the Alporchones on March 17, 1452.
Battle of the Alporchones
At the beginning of March 1452, the Granada army made an incursion into the lands of the kingdom of Murcia, entering through Lorca and reaching Cartagena. The troops that came to the aid were commanded by the Warden of the Fortress of Lorca D. Alonso Fajardo. The battle took place in the Alporchones (Lorca), where the Christian armies of Lorca achieved the desired victory.
Saint Patrick's Collegiate
For the construction of the Collegiate it was necessary to obtain the papal bull granted in 1533 by Clement VII at the request of dean Sebastián Clavijo, who would become the first abbot of the Collegiate.
The work lasted 250 years, from 1536 to 1780, and was carried out in the Renaissance and Baroque artistic styles. The design was given by the master builder of the Diocese of Cartagena Jerónimo Quijano.
It was conceived like a cathedral, its interior is articulated in three naves, side chapels, choir, backchoir, transept, ambulatory with radial chapels and tower at the head.
In the 18th century the building was completed with the choir and backchoir, atrium, Capitular Halls, carrerón of the plaza de España and culmination of the tower.
The monumental main façade was built between 1694 and 1710 under the direction of José Vallés in protobaroque style. The central street was decorated with sculptures of San Patricio and the Virgen del Alcázar, the front crowns the angel of fame, on both sides are San Clemente, San Indalecio, Suceso and Sanable, the latter three related to the diocese Eliocratense de Lorca.
In the 19th century, through an 1851 Concordat with the Holy See, the Insigne Colegial became the Church of San Patricio.
