Now surrounded by water in the lower lake of the gardens, the Boy on the Turtle fountain has an interesting story. The heavy cherub sculpture was stolen in 1977, only to be recovered in a car park in Richmond two and a half years later. It was once actually in the Carlton Gardens in the 1850s on the Rathdowne street side until it moved in 1937 to Nicholson street, then onward to the Fitzroy Gardens. The artist is unknown.
