You are now at the foot of a striking mound that rises up from the level polder landscape, as we pointed out earlier. You are probably wondering what it is.
This is Big Spotters Hill, the landmark of the Floriade hosted here in 2002. Every world fair has its own eye-catching feature, and this Floriade was no exception. Big Spotters Hill was constructed with some of the soil excavated when the ‘Polder Runway’ was constructed – it was quite a lot of earth. If you collected all this soil into lorries, there would be a traffic jam from here to Paris.
Big Spotters Hill is shaped like a pyramid. In fact, the mound has exactly the same measurements as the Great Pyramid of Giza. And there are more similarities to that world wonder: this pyramid also contains valuables. When it was constructed, the Floriade’s architects and their children buried building plans under the mound. Imagine how archaeologists, looking for remains of our era, will discover what exactly Big Spotters Hill is when they find the plans.
Nowadays, Big Spotters Hill is known for something completely different: the Mystery Land dance festival. If you would like to see how people party here, you will find videos of recent editions of this special festival under ‘more information’. When you have finished watching the video, you can resume the tour by continuing straight ahead across the bridge.
