"I had two serious accidents in my life (...) one in which a streetcar hit me, the other was my husband."
At the age of six, Frida was affected by paralysis in her right leg. In her eighteenth year, she was hit by a tram. Thereafter, her already fragile and pain-wracked body had trouble rehabilitating.
She had a turbulent marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Both had many extramarital affairs. Frida had intimate relationships with both men and women (including Josephine Baker, the famous banana skirt dancer). In the painting The two Fridas, the artist portrayed her struggle with her cultural identity. On the right we see Frida as a Mexican woman, and on the left Frida portrays her European background.
