Welcome in our museum!
A few kilometers from the Frisian coast, are the famous "kazematten" (casemates) of Kornwerderzand, on the "Afsluitdijk".
On 12 May 1940, the German 1st Cavalry Division have overrun the last Dutch defences in Friesland, and prepared for an assault to take the two lines of casemates at Fort Kornwerderzand. They did not succeed. A mere 225 Dutch soldiers stopped the circa 15000 German troops over here.
The fortress remained in Dutch hands, until the surrender of the Dutch forces on 15 May 1940.
