Abovyan on the top of Mount Ararat. 1944, Oil on Canvas, 49×53, EIG
The painting is a preparatory sketch for the planned theme, however it is a complete and independent work. Isabekyan appealed to the patriotic theme and found the solution in a romantic style, where the main character is Khachatur Abovyan, the founder of the modern Armenian literature, who had a tragic fate: he climbed the Masis mountain and never returned.
Abovyan is standing on a rock against the sky, resisiting the strong wind and looking down.
By broad and loose strokes the artist showed us the harmony of the strong wind and the game of sun rays. The whole composition is filled with the spirit of heroism, which gives a romantic meaning to the legend of Khachatur Abovyan’s mysterious death.
