Welcome to Ercolano one of the towns of the Golden Mile.

The Golden Mile, is a way from San Giovanni a Teduccio to Torre Annunziata with historical and beautiful houses of the18thcentury. This great complex of buildings are the VesuvianVillas. They are about one hundred twentytwo and represent the heritage of the bourbonic art, during the Reign of two Sicilies of Charles III of Bourbon. In 1738, King Charles and his wife Maria Amalia of Sassonia built in Portici a new Royal Palace and started the scaves  of  the  old  site  of Hercolaneum. The nobles followed the King and built along the bay of Naples at the shadow of Vesuvius beautiful summerhouses. The Vesuvian Villas are in Neoclassical Style, with wonderful gardens, fountains, and statues. The rooms are in Baroque and Rococo’ Style, with decorations and frescos. In Ercolano there are about 22 VesuvianVillas, butonly some are open to public. We are visiting: il Palazzo Comunale and Villa Ruggiero.

Palazzo Comunale is in Corso Resina, the old Via delle Calabrie. This villa wasbuiltbefore the XVIII century, and todayhouses the localmunicipality. The building is in Neoclassicol Style, in grey and yellow, and it has two floors. At the entrance, the great staircase in marble, goes up to the noble floor. Here the halls are decorated with frescoes, columns and golden stuccos. The garden, is a public park, rich in flowerbeds, citrus, benches and a big fountain in the centre.

Villa Ruggiero was built in the 18th century, and it is in Rococò style. It has three floors, two short side wings and a courtyard. The elegant facàde has stuccos, white marble and arches. In the big terrace there is the bust of San Gennaro, looking at the Vesuvius. The noble floor has elegant frescoes with rich decorations in Pompeian style vines, flowers and fruit. In the garden, there are decorative elements of Vesuvian stone, old trees end citrus. On the ground floor is located the City Library "Buonajuto" which has more than 20,000 books, many of them on the local history.
