The tour
In this tour through the National Hideout museum you will find a collection of items in each room. These items inform you about the significance of the room and what to find there. But please take a good look around yourself.
The museum
The National Hideout museum is situated in three connected monumental houses at the Markt. It describes the survival of a small community in common and uncommon times – suited for both young and old. Alongside varying expositions about the topic we offer educational information, hiking and cycling tours as well as guided tours through the museum and Aalten.
In the house at Markt 12 an overview is presented of citizen’s daily life in the occupied Netherlands during the years 1940-1945. Experience the “war under one roof” by the stories of those who lived and worked in this house during the Second World War: a family with two little children, the german Ortskommandant, the hiding dwellers as well as the neighbours that come and take shelter in the basement during bombing alarm. As “hideout village” Aalten had the largest percentage of people living in hiding in the Netherlands.

Leuk en informatief museum. Nette ontvangst en goede uitleg van de gastvrouw. Wat wij jammer vonden is dat er veel audioapparaten niet werkten. Maar een absolute aanrader.
