Genoa’s cathedral, which is known as the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is situated in a little square uphill from where port Antico is located.
This iconic structure was started in a Romanesque design, but was later given a Gothic style, which were later followed by several other centuries of alterations and restorations and, for this, this cathedral has a range of styles on display that are enough to make it a tourist attraction. The exterior of this cathedral is ornamented and stripped with columns in several decorative and colored marbles, where the steps leading to the entry of the church are well guarded by two photogenic stones resembling a lion. A 14th century Byzantine-style fresco is located just inside the main portal. A quite lovely Renaissance side-chapel, decorated with elegant statutes, which holds the ashes of John the Baptist (a source for miraculous quantity of relics), were worshipped in the Cappella id Giovanni Battista.
To add more to what makes the church a memorable sight, St. Lawrence, to which the church was dedicated, is one of the Genoa’s patron saints. St. Lawrence, and the grill he was martyred on, can be seen over the main door in a sculptural depiction.
After viewing the cathedral, make sure you visit its treasury, which is located at the basement. The treasury is popularly known as the Museo del Tesoro di San Lorenzo. Inside the treasury, you will have a chance to see various historic treasures such as a platter, which is said to have been the one used to present the head of John the Baptist. Other treasures include a highly decorated coffer that is used to carry the prized saintly ashes in processions in the city of Genoa. Others include a lovely Byzantine cross and the Holy Grail.
