Museum Ilya Glazunov Gallery

        Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov is an artist unequalled in the versatility of his talent and the scope of his ideas in Russian art of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He demonstrated his talent as a portraitist and landscape painter, a creator of monumental historical paintings and stage sets, and as an architect and a graphic artist who depicted many characters from Russian literature. Ilya Sergeyevich is the author of the book “The Road to You” and of the historical and biographical work “Russia Crucified,” to which we will often refer during our tour.
        The artist put forth an extraordinary effort in preserving and restoring monuments of the domestic cultural heritage; he actively participated in the activities of the patriotic club “Rodina” (“Motherland”) and the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments created with his assistance. In 1987, Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov founded a higher institution of art
education in Moscow, the Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, which was later named after him. The last grand project by Glazunov was the Museum of Russian Estates, where the artist presented genuine treasures from his personal collection that reflected the beauty of the culture and way of life of Russia’s diverse social strata.
          For his prolific activity, Ilya Sergeyevich Glazunov was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the USSR. He also received numerous other awards: he became a full holder of the Order of Merit to the Fatherland and a recipient of the highest UNESCO award, the Picasso Gold Medal, for his contribution to world culture and civilization.
          The art gallery of Ilya Glazunov opened in 2004, after the author donated his paintings and graphic works to the city of Moscow. In the gallery’s interiors, designed according to the artist’s sketches, more than 700 of his works are presented.
