The first thing you will see upon entering the Old Town is the equestrian statue of Karl XIV Johan who became the king of Sweden and Norway in 1818. Before his coronation, the king was known as Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte; in the past, he used to be a general from Napoleon’s army. After his death on March 8, 1844, a tattoo was found on his hand, bearing the motto “Death to Monarchs!”.
