The creation of this valley dates back to glacier Abduano that during the last ice age carried large amounts of debris that are still visible in the hills around the valley. The first human settlements of Ligurian and partly Celtic people developed, in fact, in these hills.
In 196 BC the Romans conquered these territories, creating the first colony called Comum Oppidium, but only about a century later, in 89 BC, the Romans decided to create the first true fortified city that still has left its mark, the Roman city called "Novum Comum". As every fortified city, it was surrounded by walls and the layout of the buildings consisted in different doors, one of which called Porta Praetoria (today Porta Torre) that gave access to the Cardo (now Via Cesare Cantú), that is the way to access the Main road called Decumanus (now Via Independenza) where the temple dedicated to Jupiter was located (current P.za S. Fedele). The structure of the town remained like that for over a 1000 years, but in the Middle Ages it was destroyed by the city of Milan. Following, Como allied to the Saxon Prince (Frederick Barbarossa) who fortified the city again with the walls.
