Audio guide to the Saalow barn windmill

A technical gem tells a story

The Saalow barn windmill is a unique structure – a windmill hidden inside a barn. Built around 1860 by farmer Johann Leberecht Schubert in Podemus, Saxony, it ingeniously combined craftsmanship, everyday knowledge and technical expertise. After decades of use as a grist mill for animal feed, it was decommissioned, dismantled, stored – and finally reconstructed in Saalow.

The audio guide accompanies you on a tour through the six stations of the mill. It tells of Schubert's inventive spirit, the ingenious technology, the importance of mills in the 19th century, the visible traces of the past – and the commitment of the people who saved this technical marvel from oblivion.

With a mixture of explanatory voiceovers and historical quotations, the guide brings the mill to life. Listen to the sound of the gears, the weight of the flour sack, the pride of a builder – and embark on a journey through time into the world of milling, wind and rural life.
