Riguardo il museo
Barnard was founded in 2010 by owner and director Christiaan Barnard and is home to a select group of contemporary artists. The gallery has hosted a number of significant solo exhibitions by its stable of artists as well as noteworthy group shows including Point of View: Contemporary South African Photography (2013); Paint Matters (2014); Picture & Paper (2015); Future / Present (2016) and Fluid: Perspectives in Paint (2017). Art Fairs have increasingly become a feature of the gallery schedule with participation in the FNB Joburg Art Fair (2012-2017); Cape Town Art Fair (2013-2017); 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, London (2016-2017), VOLTA NY, New York (2017) and AKAA (Also Known as Africa), Paris (2017).
Recipients of prestigious awards and international residency grants, gallery artists have been selected for inclusion in the Beijing Biennial and Le Biennial de Dakar amongst others and have exhibited in group shows hosted by significant museums and institutions including IZIKO South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; Pratt Institute, New York; Foto Museum, Antwerp; BOZAR, Brussels, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice; Museo Carlo Bilotti, Rome and The Center for Book Arts, New York.
In 2013 the gallery extended its activities to include Barnard Gallery Publishing, an initiative aiming to further explore and support the work and careers of the gallery’s stable of artists through the medium of the book. These limited edition and signed publications are an extension of the collaboration between gallery and artist. To date publications by Lien Botha, Ryan Hewett, Alexia Vogel and Sarah Biggs have been added to the collection of the Thomas J Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York amongst others.
