Sydney Bus Museum

We are a working museum made up of over 250 members who together help to preserve a rare, and invaluable collection of historic buses dating from the 1920s to 1980s.

Our organisation has continued to exist for over 25 years thanks to our entirely voluntary workforce, who ensure our vehicles are regularly made available for various community and charitable events.


A LITTLE ABOUT OUR COLLECTION
Our collection consisting of over 70 vehicles ranges from primitive 1920s type buses, through to 1940s and 50s Leyland’s and AEC’s as well as the more modern 1980s Mercedes-Benz city buses. The Museum also houses Australia’s largest collection of historic double deckers, including those from Sydney, Adelaide and London.


THE NEW SYDNEY BUS MUSEUM
In 2010, the State Transit Authority re-commissioned our former home at Tempe to an operational bus depot. As a result the Museum was closed, and relocated to a new home in the restored tram sheds at Leichhardt in Sydney’s inner west.

Our vision for our new premises at Leichhardt is to provide Sydney with a world-class interactive transport museum where the community can experience Sydney’s road transport history, including a historic double decker bus service each Sunday connecting the inner west with the Sydney CBD.

Since 2010, our volunteers have been busy setting up the new Museum, to finally achieve this goal in anticipation of a long-awaited opening in 2015.


THE CHALLENGE AHEAD
Relocating from Tempe to Leichhardt has come at a great cost to the Museum. With no admissions for such a long period of time, along with various setup and construction costs has taken away finances usually reserved for preserving and restoring our historic vehicle collection.

While we continue to participate in various external community events, this alone does not provide a sustainable income for the Museum.
