The skeleton of Hipparion. The name of this extinct representative of Equidae in Ancient Greek means ""little horse"". Modern horses are not directly related to Hipparion, they descended from another ancestor. There are several dozen species of Hipparion. All of them are three-toed. The main supporting finger was the middle one, while poorly developed lateral fingers could move apart, preventing from sinking into soft or marshy ground.
