Zuid-Holland: water, meadows and (wind) mills

Leaving the larger towns such as The Hague and Rotterdam, you will notice that Zuid-Holland offers broad horizons and pleasant views.
The poet Hendrik Marsman, who came from this area, wrote: “When I think of Holland, I see broad rivers moving slowly through endless lowlands, rows of incredibly frail poplars like high plumes on the horizon and, sunken into the vast spaces, farmsteads scattered about the land …” This is the Netherlands’ Green Heart: stretches of meadows with peacefully grazing cattle, broad ditches, gnarled pollard willows, ancient farmhouses and welcoming villages.
A typical feature of this countryside is the Dutch windmill. At the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinderdijk, rows of wind mills symbolise the eternal link between Zuid-Holland and the water.
