“Schipfe” is one of Zürich’s oldest districts. The name “Schipfe” dates back to the area’s shipping history and refers to how boats were hauled in and out of the water. In the Middle Ages, Schipfe was a trading center for important goods, and from the 16th century, it was a center for the silk industry, bath houses and shipbuilding. Remains of tools that have been found in the Limmat river indicate that the Schipfe area was inhabited during the Bronze Age. Evidence of a Celtic settlement from the 1st century has also been found.
Today, Schipfe remains an artisans’ neighborhood. An idyllic Old Town quarter directly on the Limmat river – with shops that celebrate artisanship. The foundations of the houses date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Schipfe is a romantic spot for lingering, shopping and eating. Let yourself be carried away by the picturesque atmosphere and treat yourself to a stroll through the Schipfe district.
