HERITAGE
Heritage combines the three topics that move me most: culture, history and people. Separately and combined, they intrigue, inspire and invigorate my professional life. My approach to heritage is fluid and dynamic: while heritage links us to the past, it is simultaneously part and parcel of, and an inspiration for, the present and the future.
Acknowledging heritage as the result of human (inter)action inevitably implies an interest in social aspects related to heritage. In order for heritage to live on, it needs to be cared for and used by people. Therefore, questions such as ‘To whom is this heritage relevant, and why?’, ‘What does this imply for/affect this particular heritage?’ and ‘How does this heritage contribute to society today?’ are not only relevant but essential when I think about and deal with heritage.
The areas of heritage that fascinate me most are architecture, planning and (performing) arts. What makes these fields so appealing – apart from their aesthetics – is their development and their interaction with, influence on, and reflection of, societies and societal activities.
RESEARCH
History and the built environment of the twentieth century are the topics that steer my research
with the architecture and planning in the Dutch East Indies and Indonesia, and in the (immediate) post World War II world lay at the heart of my research portfolio.
History and the built environment of the twentieth century are the topics that underpin my research, with the architecture and planning in the Dutch East Indies and Indonesia residing at the heart of my research portfolio.
My research is original, informative and inspiring. It is also widely acknowledged and appreciated by both general and specialist audiences.
To conduct my research, I employ a historical as well as an empirical and participatory approach. My research findings are scholarly, practicable and accessible, and presented in written and oral form. CONSULTANCY
Where can I find information about a building or a person? What organisation and people are interesting to contact for my project? Is it possible to organise an exhibition, performance, workshop or tour, and how to organise this? To find the answers to these and similar questions, I can help you.
After more than 25 years of experience, I am extremely familiar with collections, archives and libraries, major and minor players, views and opinions, and business and funding opportunities related to architecture, town planning, and the (performing) arts. My consultancy activities therefore cover a wide range of activities, ranging from content to organisation and practicalities.
Depending on your needs, I can advise and assist you, I can plan and develop alongside you or your colleagues, or I can take a more active role and manage and implement for you. As long as your requirements match my experience, these – and many more – consultancy scenarios are possible.
