Oceanides refers to the sea nymphs of Greek mythology which were often part human and part sea-creature. They reflect the exuberant energy and playfulness that the Greek philosophers called ‘the laughter of the gods’. The two figures represent joyful bathers in the sun and sea, luxuriating in the beauty of Manly and the relationship between humankind and other creatures. Donated to Manly Council by Rosemary Eather in 2004 in memory of her parents who, as nearby residents, enjoyed the view of this sculpture from their window. Helen Leete also has sculptures in The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, Macquarie University Sculpture Park, Kuringai Art Centre and Gallery 460 Sculpture Park, Gosford.
