In this street on the right, stands a bronze column. This monument was erected in memory of Peter Fechter. This 18 years-old young man was shot on August 17th 1962 by border guards, in front of numerous witnesses, while trying to cross the Wall to reach West Berlin. Seriously wounded, he layed on the ground, dying at the bottom of wall, without receiving help, where he died an hour later. The West Berlin police and allied border guards from Checkpoint Charlie could absolutely not intervene in the territory of the east. These particularly tragic circumstances, made Peter Fechter a symbol of all those who tried to escape and cross the wall.
