À propos du musée

The Brera Gallery hosts one of the most important collection of Italian paintings worldwide.
It was established by Napoléon Bonaparte in 1809, even though a first collection with educational purposes existed already from 1776. It was founded by Mary Therese of Austria for the students of the Accademia di Belle Arti. Nowadays the works of art hosted in Brera are mainly of religious subjects; they were confiscated from churches and convents now abolished.
Brera contains also several artworks from the 19th century.
