The long-eared hedgehog
(Hemiechinus auritus)
The distribution range of the long-eared hedgehog is West, Central and East Asia, North Africa. The body length is 15-27 cm. It looks like a larger common hedgehog. Unlike it, the long eared hedgehog relies on its quick feet than on the needles, although it is able to roll itself up into a ball. The long-eared hedgehog feeds on various small animals. When the temperature is below ten degrees the hedgehog goes into hibernation. It is active at night and can walk 7-9 km. per night in search of food. The gestation period is up to 31-35 days. The little hedghogs are born in May and June. They are blind and helpless with soft white needles which begin to harden in a week.
