The Swedish Saab 35 Draken jet fighter is the newest military aircraft on display in the museum. The Finnish Air Force bought the Draken fighters from Sweden in the 1970’s to serve alongside the Soviet MiG-21’s. The Drakens served as the main fighter type in the Finnish Air Force until the 1990’s, after which they were replaced by the American F-18’s. The last Drakens flew until 2000. The McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet is the Air Force’s current fighter type, and is estimated to remain in use until at least 2020.
The Draken on display (DK-206) was delivered to the Air Force in 1978, to replace a plane that was damaged in a fire. It flew its last flight to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in 1995 before being deposited in the Aviation Museum. The plane was nicknamed ”Hantta”, referring to the pilot who flew it to Finland, Hannu Helvelahti.
There is also a flight simulator next to the entrance, built on a real Draken training simulator. You are welcome to try out your skill in piloting a jet fighter!
