À propos du musée

The Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts started its life in 1936 as the Sverdlovsk Picture Gallery in the building No. 11 on Vainer Street. In 1958, in this very building visitors were able to admire the restored Kasli Cast Iron Pavilion, though the height of the ceiling was too low to show it in its full splendor: The banners and elements of the cornice crowning the pavilion were not displayed, remaining in storage.
The large-scale project was launched to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Ekaterinburg that was founded in 1723 as a factory town. The vast area around the former factory dam went through profound historic renovation and remodeling: The present-day operating facilities were relocated outside the historic center; the cleared space was improved and landscaped; the buildings were restored and conveyed to museums. The area was turned into the Historical Square that lies right in the heart of our city.
The final stage of the prodigious project included reconstruction of one of the oldest surviving buildings of the city – the factory hospital built in 1749. The neighboring structures surrounding a square-shaped yard were rebuilt and remodeled at various times during the 19th century. The building complex served a variety of purposes, offering its hospitality to other tenants, such as the Ekaterinburg Mint, an assay laboratory, a jail, the Alexandrovsky almshouse, and even to the first Ural theatrical company of P.A. Sokolov, which gave its performances in this building in 1843.
During the first half of the 1980s, the building complex was completely reconstructed: The authors of the project retained the most valuable parts of the heritage asset (the southern, western and northern buildings and structures), widened the courtyard, turning it into a display area, and even had sufficient space for two arcades, having taken advantage of the height difference between the main and the adjacent buildings.
Part of the collection was relocated from the picture gallery to the new building; the total exhibition space increased, giving room to new permanent displays.
