The affiliated Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in the USA, based in New York, was established in autumn 1999. It was inaugurated in October 2000 with a major exhibition of 20th century Greek painting and influenced by classical antiquity, organised in collaboration with the National Gallery of Greece.

The mission of the affiliated Foundation is to promote Greek culture in the United States and to cultivate cultural bilateral relations. In the present cultural environment of international interaction and globalisation, the Foundation deems necessary to draw attention to the importance of the Greek spirit and its significant contribution to contemporary civilization.

The Onassis Foundation (USA) is housed in the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue, in the heart of New York. The Onassis Cultural Center NY, an exhibition and 200 seat auditorium, recently renovated is located off the public atrium, accessed by a glass staircase leading to a large foyer.  Specially commissioned works of contemporary art rotate at The Art Wall at the atrium of Olympic Tower.

The Olympic Tower atrium also hosts permanent site-specific installations and a series of contemporary artworks by Greek and American artists inspired by Hellenism.  Artists include Stephen Antonakos, Kostas Varotsos, Barbara Kasten, Kalliope Lemou and Aimilia Papaphilippou.

The Olympic Tower public atrium displays 19th century plaster casts of the Parthenon frieze, of remarkable quality and historical value, based on the originals at the British Museum. The atrium is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm.  Public and business visitors to the atrium, and many schoolchildren have the chance to become acquainted with and observe one of the finest expressions of Greek cultural heritage.
