Inostrancevia alexandri
Locality: Sokolki, Little Northern Dvina River, Arkhangelsk Region
Age: Late Permian, 255 million years
The skeleton of a big predator that lived at the end of the Paleozoic era. Inostrancevia was found in the Upper Permian deposits on the Northern Dvina by Vladimir Amalitsky at the end of the XIX century and was named by him in honour of his teacher, St. Petersburg geologist Inostrantsev. Inostrancevia belongs to a group of theriodonts, or mammal-teeth reptiles. They are distinguished from other reptiles by the presence of teeth differentiation in form and function that recalls the differentiation of mammal teeth. Canine teeth of Inostrancevia are greatly enlarged like the saber-tooth cats' ones.
