Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque
Welcome to Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque!
The Gazi Husrev Beg Mosque is the largest Mosque in Sarajevo and is the centre of what is commonly known as the Gazi Husreg Beg complex, a number of buildings which together make up the centre of the Ottoman settlement in Sarajevo. We have seen examples of Huzrev-Beg before in Sarajevo, as he played a vital role in the development of culture and commerce in the city’s early years. He succeeded Isa-Bey as the governor of Sarajevo and in addition to Mosques he built schools, markets, administrative facilities and public baths.
It is the grandest example of the architectural style of the Ottomans and was one of the first buildings constructed by Gazi Husrev Beg in the 16th Century. It is the largest Mosque in Sarajevo but due to its location and because it is spread out does not initially seem as large as it is.
The inside of the Mosque is intricately decorated with wooden panels on the dome and there are many decorative paintings throughout the building. Unfortunately the Mosque was badly damaged during the siege of Sarajevo and has been reconstructed. Though not as impressive as it once was it is still true to its original style.
As it is a working Mosque, non-Muslims cannot view during prayer so keep this in mind when visiting.
Outside the Mosque there are a number of tombs, one of which is Gazi Husrev Beg’s himself, as well as many of the important early residents of the city. The decorative garden and school complex or madrassa next to the Mosque can also be visited. The madrassa has a small museum inside which tells more about Huzrev-Beg’s life and his role in the development of the city.
