Museo “Zdravnevo” is the museum-estate of Ilya Repin

Hello! Today we are going to the museum of the Russian artist Ilya Efimovich Repin. This museum is located 15 kilometers northeast of Vitebsk on the site of the artist’s former estate. It is still not known exactly how it happened that the great artist came to buy a plot in the vicinity of the city of Vitebsk. The Drovnevo tract (“Zdravnevo” it became at the instigation of Repin) together with the estate was purchased in 1892 with money raised from the sale of the painting “Zaporozhye Cossacks writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan.” Ilya Efimovich did a lot of improvement of his estates, the main manor house was rebuilt according to his drawings, the bank of the Dvina was strengthened with stone masonry, many trees were planted, a linden and spruce alley was laid out, outbuildings were built and repaired. Repin spent eight summer seasons here (1892-1900), painted two icons for the Sloboda Church, almost forty paintings and drawings: “Belorussian”, “Autumn Bouquet”, “Duel”, “Young Ladies Walking Among a Herd of Cows”, “On sun"… Now icons and many drawings, as well as original documents and photographs are kept in the funds of the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore; what is presented here are copies of photographs and works of the artist. After the death of Ilya Efimovich in 1930 (he died in his other estate - Penates, near St. Petersburg), the house passed to his relatives. After some time, the estate was sold, and during the Great Patriotic War it was almost completely destroyed. The museum-estate of I. E. Repin "Zdravnevo" was recreated only in 1988. This unique landmark of Vitebsk was created practically from scratch: the main house was rebuilt according to the surviving drawings of the artist and the memories of those who once visited here. The museum-estate complex includes a manor house in which there is a memorial exhibition, a manager's house (the museum administration and exhibition hall are located here), a cellar, a pond, part of a linden and spruce alley. You can get to the Museum-Estate of I. E. Repin "Zdravnevo" by driving from Vitebsk along Gagarin Street towards the town of Ruba. In Roubaix, after crossing the bridge over the Western Dvina River, you need to turn right. After a couple of kilometers you will see a sign to the estate.
