CREATIVE INTERPRETATIONS AND CONTEMPORARY VIEWS OF FAMILY HISTORY

This izi.TRAVEL audio guide is the recording of four family history stories that accompany the exhibition. Listen to the stories of the Ziegenfusz, Deen, Howe and Lum Chew families as compiled by Senior Librarians Stephanie Ryan and Christina Ealing-Godbold.

Explore diverse individual and family stories shared by traditional custodians of this land and by culturally diverse Queenslanders, through unique installations of objects, photographs, artworks, and memories. Tradition Now explores how many Queenslanders arrived to this land, connected to or disconnected from family and tradition, and the subsequent impacts these decisions have had on their family life.

Tradition Now looks at themes of dislocation, rediscovery, tradition, travel, and spirituality. Histories are told of times past, intriguing journeys, and the development of new family heritage and traditions are shared.

This exhibition explores the experiences of refugees from Eritrea (Saba Abrahams and family), Vietnam (Anh Donald, Dr Alan Lan Van and Minh-Ha Tran), those arriving in the hope of making a better life for themselves and their families from Iran (Hesam Fetrati), China (Pamela See), Romania (Simone Eisler) and Tonga (Ofa Takeifanga and family). Visitors are invited into the art practice of Katina Davidson (Kullilli and Yuggera people, descendent of Purga mission with maternal non-indigenous Australian heritage) and through a photo-narrative are able to explore the family life and cultural traditions of the main families from Wujal Wujal in far north Queensland.

Diverse as these stories are, they are all welcoming you into their lives. For a moment you are invited to reflect on what they are offering, sit down and read or listen as they reflect on the past and present, and express their hopes for the future.
