DISPLAY 4. THE KYIV-MOHYLA ACADEMY
Another remarkable landmark of Podol, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, was one of the oldest academic and theological schools of Eastern Europe. Founded in 1615, it was the first school for higher education in East Slavic lands. Academy provided students with educational standards close to universities of Western Europe. The Academy educated the Ukrainian political and intellectual elite in the 17th and 18th centuries. The admissions were open to all social classes. Through this in particular the Academy played an important role in transmitting Renaissance ideas from Western Europe to Ukraine and Russia.
Among the books presented on the display there are “Russian Grammar” by Mikhail Lomonosov, philosophy theses of D.Vellansky, work of G.Konisskiy, portrait of G.Skovoroda. A 1681 seal with blazon of sotnik Kiselevsky and oven tiles from 17th-18th centuries Podol are also displayed.
