THE HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM
During the First World War, the Italian-Austrian front was in the south of Trentino.
Rovereto was evacuated and the castle was heavily bombed by the Italian artillery.
After the war, a group of citizens set out to create a museum to commemorate the conflict that united Trentino to Italy, known at the time as the "war of salvation".
The museum was inaugurated in 1921 by the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III. It immediately became a destination for citizens, schools, associations, veterans and their families.
Today, the museum is one of the most important history museums in Italy. Its scope is to inform visitors and encourage them to think and learn about peace.
Over the years, donations of documents, objects and memorabilia from citizens, veterans and state organisations have enriched the museum's collections. Donations are still a valuable asset to the War Museum: if you have photographs, documents or materials related to the experience of soldiers or civilians, and you want to conserve them, contact us.
