About the museum

Museum-estate of Leo Tolstoy in Khamovniki is a memorial complex and preserves realities of the times of Tolstoy’s life there. According to instructions of Leo Tolstoy the main building was completed. Memorial things were preserved as well as furniture etc. There is also reserved areas of 0,96 hectares.

This country estate at Dolgo-Khamovnichesky pereulok (today it is called Lev Tolstoy street) was a home for writer and his family during nineteen winters since 1882 till 1901.

Many events took place in those country estate. In 1884 the last daughter Alexandra was born, in 1886 son Alexey died, in 1888 the last kid of Tolstoy family – Vanechka - was born, but his life was pretty short.

House at Khamovniki is a place where Tolstoy wrote about one hundred novels including “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”, “The Kreutzer Sonata”, novel “Resurrection”, pieza “The Power of Darkness”, ”Harvest of education”, “Living corpse”.
