Creatures of Norwegian Mythology
While we get to the next spot you might want to hear about the creatures that used to be as real as humans to generations before us. The Nordic countries are all full of mysterious creatures and Norway has some of their own apart from the ordinary trolls, gnomes and elves that you will get to know now!
Several of the scary creatures have to do with the sea, and were said to kill fishermen, which is easily explained by Norway’s proximity to the sea and the fact that Norway made a living during many years almost solely on the trade of fish and also transport was mainly done seaways.
Amongst the horrors awaiting those at sea was the Kraken, now famous from movies and books, but long before that a creature who roamed the Norwegian Sea. The beast was often seen as a huge eight armed octopus that lived deep down in the ocean, and at times came up to drag down ships into the deep darkness. Sometimes the Kraken could have the shape of a giant crab, so that unlucky fishermen would get stranded on an island that wasn’t there a moment ago, and only too late find out that their ship had hit Kraken.
Another ghastly sea creature is Draugen who, just like Kraken was likely to be the last thing you ever saw, had you the bad luck of running into him at sea. Draugen was thought to be the ghost of a man who drowned at sea, huge and monster like, covered in sea weed and rowing half a boat! He would appear at stormy nights and screaming and roaring try to sink ships and kill sailors and fishermen. So if you return by boat after your visit to Oslo, make sure you look out for Kraken and Draugen, ‘cause, who knows, they might still be luring deep down in the cold, dark Norwegian waters!
