Audio tour Summary
What if you could meet everyone on an entire Baltimore city block, in less than an hour?
Radio producer Aaron Henkin and music producer Wendel Patrick are sharing the stories of Baltimore in a way that's never been heard before, and this is your invitation to join the adventure.
This tour takes you through the 200 block of West Saratoga Street, nestled in the frenetic bustle of downtown Baltimore. Church bells ring in a duet with the clanging Light Rail, city buses rattle and hiss, and loud sidewalk conversations compete with the din. These are the sounds that reverberate through a block peppered with Bengali body oil shops, barbershops and salons, a magic candle store, and the shoe-repair shop of a Russian cobbler. A vanguard of artists populates a five-story building on the block, a honeycomb of musicians, painters, fashion designers, and jewelers. As a sum of its parts, 200 West Saratoga is an ecstatic cacophony of optimism, ambition, anxiety, and resilience.
- 1 I'm from Bangladesh. We separate from Pakistan in 1971. We are independent country now.
- 2 All this headache, I'm going leave it one day. One day, I'm going find a good life.
- 3 I became a Muslim in the prison system 23 years ago. It kind of turned into a blessing.
- 4 We have Cocoa Mango, Eat it Raw, Egyptian Musk, Ice Villain, Super Playboy, and Lick Me All Over
- 5 Right now, I'm old, you know. I don't have no more dreams.
- 6 My grandfather was a barber. I'm the one who carries on the legacy.
- 7 People say, Is this a witch shop? A voodoo shop? I say, It's whatever you want it to be. What are you looking for?
- 8 It's a miniature world. Hours can go by, just running trains from point A to point B.
- 9 I've been here since '92. Everyone calls me The Mayor.
- 10 To think that I have landed on a job that I dreamed of, that would be a stretch.
- 11 I've invested my life into this space, and it's a total mess.
- 12 Everything you make, you must be willing to let go out into the universe.
