Thursday and Friday 10 – 1 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday 4 – 7 p.m.
We will be guided in his house by Carucci, himself, called Pontormo by the name of the village where we find ourselves. With his genius he opened the path towards the future of painting; Vasari acknowledges it in his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects talking about the “modern manner”.
In the Empolese Valdelsa area, in addition to his house, it is possible to visit the houses of Leonardo, Boccaccio and many other men who shaped their time.
But in general, in the houses of these characters, there appears to be little of their heritage; their works are far away, and it feels that their genius and soul are far away too.
But Pontormo's house is different; in fact here we can find both copies of his works and multimedia installations that take us close to the painter and his time. It is also unique because it hosts something extraordinary. We own the signed diary of the painter, “my book”, as he calls it. It is conserved in Florence, and there is a copy here. The writing seems brief but it lends itself to various possible interpretations: it is the diary of his last years, the basis for audacious diagnosis of hypochondria, misanthropy, and character complexity, the chest of his painting secrets.
In fact, who of us, has at least once not opened the door to someone, pretending not to be home? “Sunday Bronzino knocked on my door; then Daniello came too. I do not know what they wanted".[Jacopo Carucci called Pontormo, Diary]
In our case it certainly was not Agnolo Bronzino who knocked on our door. And who has ever decided to note all of our expenses, to keep track of the accounts?
“we ate dinner at the tavern... roasted eel for which we spent 15 coins”.
[Jacopo Carucci called Pontormo, Diary]
Let's knock on the door of the house where Jacopo lived as a child; this time, the door will be opened for us.
Let's visit his house and find out its secrets.
