An unprepaired tourist is unlikely to immediately answer the question what unites the entire architecture of Riga. But the locals know. that Riga is the world leader in the number of buildings erected in the style of art nouveau in Europe. 2/3 of the total, namely 800 houses, are made in the famous Art Nouveau style. And today we will see the most famous buildings with you.

Expressiveness of utilitarian elements, the desire to give ordinary forms elegance and beauty is the basic rule of Maihail Eisenstein, the chief architect of Art Nouveau in Riga. One of the key aspects of the style is the rejection of direct forms, the use of free, "natural" lines in the elements of buildings. In general, this style is characterized by appeal to both the theme of nature, and the use of a variety of fantastic forms and characters.

Mikhail Eisenstein (the father of the director Sergei Eisenstein) belongs to the authorship of at least fifteen houses in Riga, built in the early twentieth century. All houses are characterized by the use of rounded forms, indispensable figures of strange animals, sculptures at the entrance. Contemporaries sometimes even reproached the author for the excessive decoration of their buildings. However, time, as usual, put everything in its place, and today most of the buildings are monuments of architecture of national importance.

Do not forget to bring along the "Riga Pass", which will serve as your permanent guide in Riga. With him you can get free of charge in some museums, get discounts in restaurants and shops, use public transport at no additional cost.
